In the case of Windows, you may have to perform a bit of Googling. In 2016, Yahoo described how to install the necessary drivers for a number of drivers, including the Alfa AWUS036NHA. If you're running Windows 7, you'll find a similar procedure on the web.
EDIT: I have tried all the drivers, etc that I can find in the linux and windows help forums but none of them worked. I have tried everything I could find in the Alfa support files and they won't work either. I have tried all the drivers in the Alfa support and they have all failed. I have also tried the drivers that I could find on the aircrack-ng's list of supported adapters. None of them worked.
I have also installed the backport sta drivers to mine. So far my card is working. My only issue is getting the driver to compile. I have the dmesg from the compilations and will post that. I am having difficulty locating the device node I have to set to override the default values of the madwifi driver.
May be a little bit off but this is my take on it. I am a linux noob although I have decent experience with windows, osX, and mac. I do have a dvb-t card that I had to install a custom driver for. But for that I had to have a windows box running at the time.
Edit 3: I downloaded the driver from the Alfa website and tried to run the installer from the command line. It ran for a bit and then crashed on me. Here is the error message: ERROR:npm ERR! A complete log of this run can be found at https://app.npmjs.com/packages/airodump/logs/npm-2015-09-15T23_05_00.log
I can't figure out what I am doing wrong. I have no driver errors when I plug the adapter into my Macbook Pro. But, after I run airmon-ng start wlan0 and turn on monitor mode, I get the error Can't create /var/run/airodump.pid: Permission denied. I try to restart the computer but it just blinks black on the screen.
Edit 2: I have installed aircrack-ng, and it is working. All I have to do now is get the adapter working. I am going to try downloading the RT2870 for windows driver, and see if I can get that up and running 827ec27edc
