This is a fight captivating in its grit, sweep and sheer brutality, starring the unruly careers of two fighters: Horatio Sandoval, a charismatic Mexican fighter, and George Morales, a brash, outspoken Filipino. Sandoval and Morales, both 19, are cage-fighters competing on the world stage in Mexico. They stand at 6'6 and weigh between 240 and 260 pounds and could easily be mistaken for boxers in their prime. Not to be outdone, their promoter/manager, Iris Maldonado, has brashly declared that they are the same size as Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier because in boxing one man's heavyweight champion is another man's lightweight champion.
In a throwback to the last century's gray flannel masks of the pulp mobster, the crew of Hague's wantonly obscures their identities with black bandanas, black hats, and black clothing. In scope, the film could be said to exceed the understanding of the most sophisticated viewer. Its subplot of Hague's romance with his traveling companion, “Kid Cobra,” is as hopelessly out of grasp as a dimly perceived shadow. Hague drives into the legitimate theater of cruelty. There is no warrant for such an audience’s enjoyment. The thinking should be the same as we think of getting drunk. It is not kid’s play but cruel sport. The only natural in the picture is cruelty.
Storm Boy, the ring-leader of the Hague West Coast gang, is a soft, easygoing, good-natured, fat man, who sees himself as something of a gentleman. When he is at leisure, he lives in a kind of sprawling shanty; his bedroom is cradled in a cavernous room packed with mattresses and old-fashioned rowboats (which he waters with a dipper), fishing equipment, and an endless supply of beer, whiskey, and cigarettes. Outside the shanty, there is a slushy slope, below the roof, that he and other gang members use for masturbating and getting high. His addiction is heroin, and his sense of social responsibility is as modest as his means, and indeed his entire life is devoted to loving and following his lordship, Hague. d2c66b5586
