The princess storylines in the main feature film trilogy of the Star Wars franchise are a continuing elaboration on the archetypal princess story first presented in The Princess Bride. Princess Leia is once again featured in the main feature film, Star Wars Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015). In this film, set in the Star Wars universe immediately after the war between the Galactic Republic and the Galactic Empire, the character and mythology is once more theatrically reintroduced. During the industrial revolution in 19th century England, a young woman was rescued by Luke Skywalker on the planet Tatooine. She was named Leia, and the Skywalker family took her in. After the Battle of Yavin, the new democratic Alliance of Rebels was formed and it gradually became an interstellar force with which to overthrow the Empire.[66] Luke Skywalker was told by his deceased friend Obi-Wan Kenobi that his nephew Anakin Skywalker was a great threat to the Alliance. Skywalker was reluctantly forced to turn to the dark side of the Force and fight the evil Galactic Empire. Skywalker, who had tried to help the child, was defeated by the powerful Force-user known as Darth Vader, who has raised him from infancy and made him a powerful Sith Lord in his service.[67] The new Emperor, having learned of the rebellion from the astromech droid C-3PO, was determined to restore Imperial control over the galaxy. Princess Leia was sent in command of a starship, the Millennium Falcon, as a hidden traitor to test the Rebels, in the hope that this would lead to the death of Luke Skywalker and ultimately the death of the Galactic Empire. These movies were made to revive the franchise after the box office disaster of the Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith (2005), which ended with the death of Anakin Skywalker.[68]
The new movie trilogy includes a new character, Maz Kanata, described by Lucasfilm head George Lucas as an "old-fashioned Western storyteller".[76] Distinctive of the new trilogy are the younger, feminist perspective of the heroine characters. d2c66b5586
