Designed for anyone who wants to watch anime and doesn't want to slave over Japanese language, a long time ago, it was a rental where you paid, say, $15, and rented stuff, say, a show for four weeks. At that time, there were no such things as streaming video or downloads. And shows were much longer than one episode, and the movie was, in general, longer than two, which translates to three or four episodes waiting on the sidewalk before you can watch the next episode.
The thing was, you'd have six or seven episodes worth of new content to consume in the course of one night at a DVD rental store, and you'd often be greeted by patronizing "guidance counselors" who basically just wanted to tell you what to buy, and to steer you away from what they perceived to be overpriced and morally dubious garbage. (Yes, these people existed. Yes, they were a pain in the ass. And yes, in retrospect they probably should have been called "CUTING GUIDANCE LEADERS.") Of course having plenty of time to compare different kinds of junk like that was really the best part of renting. And you got to keep all those nifty little plastic cases for the DVDs too.
Things have changed. So much so that it used to be that DVDs were cheap, ultra-beaten up, or the kind of thing you'd pick up at someone else's house and pass on to a friend. But things have changed. Nowadays, you've got millions of titles to browse through, and prices are a lot higher. Those cases that used to give you so many hours of enjoyment have now cost you something, and there are a lot more of those cases to buy, and if you never buy them and just rent them now, you're basically spending twice the money on DVDs.
So there are tens of thousands of comic books on the stands at any given time. Of those, there are probably only a few thousand which are hard to find and therefore worth waiting in line for (you know, like the John Carter DC movies). There are tens of thousands of TVs out there. Of those, there are probably another few thousand which are absolutely awesome (that's why I, personally, spent $2000 on a brand-new Viz HDTV). d2c66b5586
