Dropped by the U.S. Army due to Lt. Colonel's illness, his fellow officer Captain Conway (James Stewart) is sent to the Third Battalion, 35th Infantry under the command of Maj. General Richard Hammond (Jack Oakie). The Third Battalion is stationed at Camp Covers in Australia when an attack by the Japanese occurs. However, the Third Battalion is not prepared to handle the attack. Major Conway takes command of the battalion and Lt. Colonel Stewart is forced to go to the front line.
About a week later, Conway is promoted to lieutenant colonel and Stewart is mustered out of the army. Conway and Stewart go to the front and unite with the other officers from the Third Battalion to fight against the Japanese. They can't return to Australia due to the fact that they are needed to reorganize their units and fight against the Japanese.
About 100 years ago on the island of i-Kiribati, Flores Island, Cummings, Archie, a teenager, is ready for fighting in the jungles. However, their fight is against the Japanese.
